Discrimination is very common in countries like India, where there are many people with different cultures and traditions. Diversity in cultures means there will be more probability of discrimination. People face discrimination on the basis of caste, place of birth, gender, colour, religion and body shaming is also a type of modern discrimination. The most common type of discrimination India facing nowadays is based on gender. LGBTQ discrimination is a type of gender inequality, almost every stratum of India is suffering from it.
What is the LGBTQ community?
LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community. LGBTQ community is the most sensitive community because it is the most prone to discrimination.
Legally, the right to choose your partner and sexuality represents dignity which is something that comes under Article 21 of the Indian constitution which talks about the Right to life. Each and every person living in the world has the right to live with dignity, but our society does not accept people who look different, whose choices are different from others. We make fun of these people, most of the women from the LGBTQ are raped. Unfortunately, people’s mentality wanders around that these people are meant to be abused, discriminated against and ridiculed. The question which arises is who is responsible and what are the reasons for this discrimination?
Reasons responsible for the discrimination against the LGBTQ community:
These are the foremost reasons for the discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
1. Lack of Sex education: Lack of sex education is the most prominent reason. India is greatly lacking sex education. Parents hesitate to answer the questions of their children regarding sex and adolescence. In schools also, children are separated while teaching about reproduction and teenagers which end up building some stereotypes in the minds of children.
2. Taboos and stereotypes: In a religious country like India, there are many taboos related to sex. People consider it false and inappropriate to marry a partner of the same-sex. About 60% of the parents leave their children alone or oblige them to leave their parents’ home just because they belong to the LGBTQ community.
3. Lack of proper rights: Article 14 of the Indian constitution defines the right to equality but these people cannot enjoy some basic rights like the right to equality, the right to choose their partner freely etc., the government should ensure that these people also get equal rights in society.
Need of the Anti-discriminatory bill:
It's high time to introduce the anti-discriminatory bill for the LGBTQ community so that they can also have equal status in society. The torture they are facing is not meant for them because of their body or gender. Recently, the High court of Tamil Nadu has given judgement and promises to ensure the equality of the LGBTQ community in the education sector and in society also. Government should take more initiatives to protect this community as it is also a part of our nation and they are also contributing to society. There are many famous persons who belong to this community for instance Rohit Bal, Deepak Bhargava etc.
The sole equality on earth is death.
