Suicide is one of the increasing concern among teenagers. Adolescence is a transition phase from childhood to adulthood with great hormonal changes. The need of affiliation and building self-identity can be a big deal for teenagers.
Adolescent face many psychological difficulties during this period and to all the more serious are adolescent depression and suicide. No one is immune to periods of sadness and bad moods .The end of a relationship failure at an important task, the death of loved ones all may produce profound feelings of sadness, loss and grief. In situations such as these, depression is a fairly typical reaction.
Almost two-thirds of Teenagers say they have experienced such feelings at one time or another and some 3 percent has experienced major depression, a psychological disorder in depression is severe and lingers for long periods. The rate of adolescent suicide in the United States has tripled in the last 30 years. One teenage suicide occurs every 90 minutes, for an annual rate of 12.2 suicides per 100,000 adolescents. In adolescence, the rate of suicide is higher for boys than girls, although girls attempt suicide more frequently.
Several warning signs should sound an alarm regarding the possibility of suicide can look like:
• Some direct or indirect talks in the conversation expressing of being dead. ( "I wish I were dead!" or "You won't have me to worry about any longer!"
• School difficulties, Staying isolated, Drastic change in grades and bunking classes.
• Loss of appetite or excessive eating.
• Insomnia , Slow in activities, Overthinking and disconnecting with friends, No communication.
• Attempting self-harm.
If you suspect anyone for that matter lets be human and help someone by being an informed consumer of development. Save a life.
Be empathetic. Listen more.
∆ Talk to the person and listen without judging them.
∆ Evaluate the situation, trying to distinguish between general upset and more serious danger.
∆ Be supportive let the person know you care, and try ti break down his/her feelings of isolation.
∆ Making them feel that their lives matter and they are valued and have the potential to cope up with the phase they are struggling.
∆ Do not try to handle the problem alone. Respect their privacy and seek professional help immediately.
